APL - Assistant Patrol Leader - Appointed by the PL to help him run the patrol, and to represent him in his absence. He is responsible to the Patrol Leader. Arrowmen - A member of the Order of the Arrow. ASPL - Assistant Senior Patrol Leader - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. He guides the troop in the absence of the SPL. Responsible to give direct leadership to the following appointed youth leaders: historian, OA Troop Representative, scribe, librarian, instructor, QM, and chaplain aide. He is responsible to the Senior Patrol Leader. Camporee - Formed form the words "camp" and "jamboree", this event is an annual competition in the VHC. Patrols from troops around the council compete within their age groups to show basic Scout skills. Chaplain Aide - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to lead Interfaith Worship Services at troop outings, encourages the saying of grace at meals while camping or on activities, informs Scouts of religious emblem program and helps maintain a reverent tone at troop functions. He responsible to the ASPL, and works with the Chaplain. Den Chief - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to serve as the activities assistant at Cub Scout den meetings, to meet regularly with the den leader to review den and pack meeting plans, to prepare the boys to join Boy Scouting and to project a positive image of Boy Scouting to the Cub Scouts and their families. He is responsible to the Assistant Scoutmaster of the New Scout patrol. Historian - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to keep a historical record or scrapbook of troop activities, gather pictures and facts of past troop activities and care for troop ribbons and souvenirs. He is responsible to the ASPL. Instructor - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to teach basic Scout skills to Scouts and patrols, and can prepare and make special presentations that will be educational for troop meetings. He is responsible to the ASPL. Jamboree - Sir Robert Baden-Powell, founder of the Scouting movement, created the idea of holding a large encampment of Scouts and leaders to celebrate Scouting in England. He called it a jamboree. Since 1937, the Boy Scouts of America has held National Scout Jamborees for Scouts and leaders of Boy Scout councils throughout the United States. Nearly 600,000 Scouts and leaders have hiked the trails, paths, and roadways since the first jamboree was held at the base of the Washington Monument on the Mall in our nation's capital. The most recent was held July 25 - August 3, 2005. The next one will be held in 2010 to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the Scouting Movement in the United States. JASM - Junior Assistant Scoutmaster - A youth, appointed by the Scoutmaster. Responsible to function as an assistant Scoutmaster (except for leadership responsibilities reserved for adults 18 and 21 years of age or older). He is responsible to the Scoutmaster. JLT - Junior Leader Training - A one day youth leader training opportunity that all Junior Leaders are expected to attend when they attain an office of responsibility. Librarian - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to set up and care for the troop library of books and merit badge pamphlets, keep records on the literature owned by the troop, maintain a system to check literature in and out, and to follow up on late returns. He is responsible to the ASPL. OA - The Order of the Arrow - The Boy Scout Honor Organization recognizes those campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. Scouts are elected to the Order by their fellow unit members, following approval by their Scoutmaster. The Spe-Le-Yai Lodge is the Verdugo Hills Council's Order of the Arrow Lodge. OA Troop Representative - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. An Order of the Arrow Troop Representative is a youth liaison serving between the local OA lodge or chapter and his troop. He is responsible to encourage camping in the troop, encourage older Scout participation in high adventure activities, encourage Arrowmen to assume leadership positions in the troop, and to encourage Arrowmen to seal their membership in the Order by becoming Brotherhood members. He is responsible to the ASPL. PL - Patrol Leader - Youth leader of a patrol consisting of between 5-8 other boys. As a member of the PLC he helps make the decisions that run the troop. In Troop 125, he is elected by his patrol to a 6 month term of office. He is responsible to plan and lead patrol meetings, keep patrol members informed, assign each patrol member a task and help them succeed, and represent his patrol at the PLC. He appoints his Assistant Patrol Leader. He is responsible to SPL. PLC - Patrol Leaders Council - The youth leaders of the troop. The PLC is chaired by the SPL. This is the group that plans and runs the troop, with guidance from the Scoutmaster. QM - Quartermaster - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to keep records of troop equipment, ensure that equipment is in good working order, issues troop equipment, and ensures it is returned in good working condition. He is responsible to the ASPL. Scribe - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to attend and keep records of the PLC, records attendance at meetings and outings and records individual Scout advancement. He is responsible to the ASPL. SPL - Senior Patrol Leader - The Youth Leader of the troop. In Troop 125, he is elected by the members of the troop for a 1 year term of office. He presides over troop meetings and the PLC. He appoints his ASPL, and other junior leaders with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to give direct leadership to the Patrol Leaders. He is responsible to the Scoutmaster. Troop Guide - Appointed by the SPL, with the advice and consent of the Scoutmaster. Responsible to introduce new Scouts to troop operations, guide new Scouts through early Scouting activities, shield new Scouts from harassment by older Scouts, help new Scouts earn the First Class rank in their first year, teach basic Scout skills, coach the new Scout PL on his duties, and attend the PLC with the new Scout PL. He is responsible to the Assistant Scoutmaster of the new Scout patrol, and the SPL. Venture Scouts - In Troop 125, a Venture Scout is a Scout who has attained the First Class rank, and is at least 14 years old. Venture Scout activities are special activities reserved for these older Scouts to provide an incentive for the older boys to continue in the program. VHC - Verdugo Hills Council, BSA - Our local council. Youth Leadership Positions - There are a number of youth leadership positions required to operate the troop. The following are those positions that will fulfill the requirement for rank advancement to Star, Life and Eagle: ASPL, Bugler, Chaplain Aide, Den Chief, Historian, Instructor, JASM, Librarian, OA Troop Rep, PL, QM, Scribe, SPL, and Troop Guide. |
