The June Troop Committee Meeting was held
at the home of Gay and Fritz Varga on June 9, 2003. Those attending were:
Brant Reed, Scoutmaster; Debbie Izumi, Treasurer; Brad Nelson, Assistant
Scoutmaster; Judy Rogers, Outings Coordinator; Armando and Brenda Sanchez,
Advancement Chairs; John Saunders, Membership Chair; Fred Stifter, Assistant
Scoutmaster; Peter Thompson, Committee Chair; Gay Varga,
Secretary-Elect; and Steve Webber, Assistant Scoutmaster.
Mr. Thompson called the meeting to order at 7:15 p.m.
Grayson Reed presented himself before the committee to approve his Eagle
Scout application. His application was approved. His Eagle Scout Board of
Review can now be scheduled with the Verdugo Hills Council.
Brandon Rogers came before the committee for review of his Eagle Scout
project. He proposed painting the handball wall at Glenoaks Elementary
School with possible dates being August 9, 23, 30 or September 6. Steve
Webber volunteered to be the project advisor when the subject of funding was
raised. A motion was made and approved by the committee to accept Brandon’s
project subject to the approval of Steve Webber before June 22.
Senior Patrol Leader’s Report - Mr.
Thompson presented Jeff Thompson’s monthly report. “This is my last report
of the year. As you know, Yuki was elected to be next year's SPL, and I
think that he will do a very good job. Over the last part of this year, our
meeting plans were more relaxed and our theme was golf. There was one
meeting where proper golf technique was practiced and then another up at
Scholl Canyon Golf Court at the driving range. These meetings were
extremely successful and will likely be repeated next year. As this year
raps up, we have had a rather lengthy debate over what to do about our 7th
grade Scouts as they are older than the Bisons, but younger than anyone in
the other patrols. However, we have decided to place them in with the
Flaming Frogs patrol (Frogs and Flaming Arrows), and this will hopefully
work out well for all involved. The last major event is the Beach Campout.
Thank you for your support of the Troop during the past year.
Committee Chair’s Report – Mr. Thompson thanked the
Scouts turning 18 this year: Matt McKenna, Grayson Reed, Joseph Stifter,
Jeff Webber and Eric Yesayan for their commitment to the troop.
Board of Review Chair’s Report – Mrs. Saunders
reported that questions had arisen regarding boys coming unprepared for
their Boards of Review. Scouts need to make appointments in advance with
Mrs. Saunders. They need to be in full uniform with all the correct
patches, and bring their Scout books.
Advancement Chair's Report – Mr. Sanchez reported that
12 merit badges and 10 rank advancements have been earned since the last
Court of Honor. Congratulations to
all Scouts who have advanced since the last
Court of Honor!
Scoutmaster’s Report – Mr. Reed congratulated Yuki
Matsushima on his election to the office of Senior Patrol Leader. Special
thanks to Jeff Thompson on an exceptional job as SPL for the past year.
Yuki announced his key appointed leaders – Austin Reed, ASPL;
Franck Beaulieu, Scribe; Kevin Sanchez, Quartermaster.
The venture age patrols were reconstituted, due to the
changes in membership. Three patrols were combined into two for 2003-2004.
Junior Leader Training was held on Saturday, June 14 at
Wilson Middle
School for all youth leaders.
Congratulations to Jeffrey Webber for
receiving the Pat Navolanic award at the Court of Honor on June 11.
Special thanks to Yuki for organizing the
driving range activity last month. All had a great time! Thanks also to the
troop committee for footing the bill! ($80).
A mandatory summer camp meeting will be
held for Scouts and their parents at 7:00 on Wednesday, June 18th
at the Glenoaks Park Clubhouse. Each summer camp participant and at least
one parent should be in attendance.
The Beach Campout is coming soon – June
20-22 at McGrath State Beach. Money and permission slips were due on June
11.
There have been 81 Eagle Scouts from Troop
125 since its
founding in 1938. The Troop record for Eagle Scout rank advancements was set
in 1983 with six youths earning that rank. There have been no more than
three in any other year. In 2003, we have already promoted three Eagle
Scouts, and a fourth was approved to send to the Council Board of Review
tonight. Only two more are required to tie the Troop record!
Treasurer’s Report – Mrs. Izumi reported that the
troop’s current checking account balance is $6,563.95.
Social Activities Committee Report – Our last Court of
Honor was on Wednesday, June 11. Thanks to Judy Rogers, Karen Saunders, and
Susanna Molner for bringing refreshments.
Membership Chair’s Report – Nothing new to report
Training Coordinator’s Report – Check the
council
website for upcoming training courses. The next training activities will be in the fall.
Venture Scout Report – Mr. Webber reported that
everyone had a great time on the May 17 bike ride in Big
Sycamore Canyon.
There is a
tentative overnight trip being planned by Mr. Dennis for July 25-26 at
Little Jimmy Springs with a day hike to Mt. Baden Powell, in the Angeles
Forest.
The
rafting trip this summer is still being investigated with regard to water
flows, and more information is needed before a date can be set.
Old Business – Mr. Stifter reported that he is still
searching for a permanent place to display the troop’s Eagle plaques and
will check with the Council. The Kiwanis lead was not an option.
The special patches to commemorate the 65th
anniversary of the troop will be ordered and passed out in the fall.
New Business – Mrs. Schmerling asked for help from
Troop 125
to bring some energy into the Cub Scout Pack. One suggestion was to have
older Scouts help out at meetings. There is a decline in recruitment in cub
Scouts which affects Troop 125.
Reservations need to be made for 2003-04 troop meetings at
the clubhouse.
Having a memento for 18 year olds leaving the troop was
discussed and they will be invited back to the last Court of Honor.
Pardee Sea Base at Marina del Rey has been reserved for 20
boys for the October 3-5th weekend. Small sailboats and kayaks
will be available.
Having an Eagle Court of Honor procedure book was discussed
and Mrs. Schmerling has offered to write up what she did for Lenny.
As there are some Scouts that need to
present themselves to the troop committee for approval of projects and Eagle
Scout applications,
it was decided that there will be an additional committee
meeting held on June 23 at the home of Mike and Debbie Izumi. All parents
are welcome and encouraged to attend.
Mr. Thompson adjourned the meeting at
9.58 p.m.
and thanked the Varga family for hosting the group.
Dates to remember - See the Troop
